This juncture is an opportunity for formalizing small-scale mining: Minister of Mines

Ministry of Mines and Energy. Cartagena, Bolivar. August 23rd, 2017.  During the mining roundtable discussions with Mayors from the southern part of Bolivar, the Minister of Mines and Energy, German Arce Zapata, expressed that the post-conflict period represents a national opportunity for recovering territories in order to legalize and formalize small-scale miners.

"We are working with Governor Dumek Turbay in order to expand mining formalization, especially in the south of the department, where there are enough resources for guaranteeing long term prosperity, as long as we carry out responsible and sustainable mining activities by complying with legal and environmental requirements," Minister Arce said.

He underlined that achieving legality requires overcome challenges such as the elimination of mercury from the productive chain. "Small-scale mining is not destined to involve the use of mercury. There are different mechanisms that will enable us to replace this element with clean technologies."

Finally, Minister Arce called on the sector to reevaluate the social dialogue model with the communities in order to provide tools for the coexistence of both small-scale and large-scale mining activities.
