Ministry of Mines and Energy. Nechi, Antioquia. May 24th, 2018. The Vice-Minister of Mines, Carlos Andres Cante, met with Mayors from the mining municipalities of the Lower Cauca region within Antioquia in order to review the situation of local communities and decide on environmental restoration measures with respect to the situation of the Nechi River due to a dyke breaking as a result of the growing winter wave.
The official emphasized that efforts continue to aim towards a responsible mining activity nationwide that produces welfare and development for the communities where it has influence. "We ask companies to show commitment to Proper Mining Activities, which means they must do a lot more than what is required by environmental licensing and mining licensing, going beyond the implications of their corporate responsibility, always thinking of the development of the communities and environmental protection," the Vice-Minister of Mines explained.
The Vice-Minister called on companies to set up contingency plans that protect the population and asked local authorities to be stricter in the control of river-based activities and to take preventive measures for the sake of the communities who live along the river.
